Blogging as a recruitment tool

Everyone knows the benefits of using a blog and blogging for marketing reasons. Blogging is simply one of the best ways to get yourself or your company known as an expert in your industry and perhaps more importantly to get in touch with potential clients. Blogging as a recruitment tool though? This is something I’m currently pondering the merits of. I suppose it like other things has pros and cons, I’ve noticed that the iQ Content guys seem to be giving it a bash anyhow. They’re looking for a project manager and have already got some ’press’ from many of Ireland’s leading bloggers. The following URLs show this:

http://www.mneylon.com/blog/archives/2007/08/14/project-manager-required-chez-iq-content/
http://www.mulley.net/2007/08/20/fluffy-links-monday-august-20th-2007/
http://www.redcardinal.ie/general/14-08-2007/iqcontent-project-manager/

I’m going to keep an eye on this to see how they get on but seemingly they already have had applications from people who learnt about the job on other peoples blogs. It’s an interesting approach and sure as hell beats paying sites like Monster & IrishJobs to advertise vacant positions. Good job from iQ Content - pun intended. Your thoughts are as always welcome.

Hi there Dave,

the blogosphere has worked before for us, though somewhat indirectly. We spotted Monsieur Des Traynor blogging on usability, and approached him directly. We’re delighted to say that he has been working with us ever since.

Hi Lar,
Thanks for the comment. I’ve read Des’s blog in the past, seems like he doesn’t update as much as he used to though, guess you guys are working him hard :-). His posts must have really impressed you if you made a direct approach, I imagine he was in a good position to ask for a lot of dollars if you came knocking on his door.

Is blogging a part of your company strategy by the way or is it just something you personally like doing. Just asking because I seem to be seeing your name/your companys name popping up a fair bit lately in the blogosphere, which is great from your POV of course.

Rgds
Dave.

Hi Dave,

we’re all working hard, thank God, not just Des :)

Blogging is definitely part of our strategy, as well as something we like doing.

I posted some thoughts on why we do it in a post titled Running a company blog

Blogging jobs is working well for iQ Content, often because of the amount of traffic some blogs get and the consequent search engine positioning posts enjoy. One candidate got to the iQ PM job by googling “Project Manager Required” and found the post about our job opening on mneylon.com, with a comment about “the company that does cool stuff”. You can’t buy that kind of endorsement on Monster or anywhere else.

Done that search myself and mneylon.com is #1, that kind of speaks for itself. Although I’m not looking for a job myself at the moment, I think I would do something similar and search for ‘c# developer required’, ‘web developer required’ or the like.

Is there are referral fee for Michele for this if his post results in a hire? I’m currently with ESBI and only yesterday the HR team published a new page on our intranet about a new staff recruitment scheme. Listen to this! They will give any staff member who introduces new employees to the company €2,500 initially and then another €2,500 if the new employee stays in the company a year. I’ve heard of incentives like this involving €500, but €5,000 is madness. Anyone know of any engineers or techies looking for work?

Hi Dave, we don’t pay any referral fee at iQ to bloggers because I think that would devalue the referral. Michele chooses to post the link or not, and I presume that he does it because he thinks highly of iQ Content, which is why that link matters so much to us.

Ah yeah I know about no referral fee, just having a laugh. Keep everyone posted anyhow about how this position gets filled. I’d be curious to know if it is actually an applicant that found out about the job on a blog that gets the position in the end.

Dave.

Though that’s not to say that we won’t show our appreciation, in some way.
