Does anyone else not see this as a fairly major flaw in Google's system? Google is designed, I believe, to be diplomatic and fair in finding the most relevant sites but the reality is that many many sites are hosted in the US and there's not a lot of alternatives. We are in New Zealand and I'm not sure that there is even a server located here that offers the services we offer—Ruby on Rails etc. It's okay when a site has a .co.nz or .org.nz domain but sometimes we have no choice but to use a .com or .org domain. These sites don't show in New Zealand-only searches.... what can we do?

Ok this is getting into deception really when hosts claim to be based in UK when actually they are IP US registered. Myhost told me straight up about their setup and this is different so I do not consider this to be an issue.

OK so I have decided to actually email Yahoo and MSN to see if by chance they might actually reply to my question. This is what I asked::

Hi there, I'm wondering what the factors are for your 'Ireland only' results. My sites IP address is registered to Ireland but still I don't show up for a search on my company name - akamarketing.com on yahoo.co.uk search. Does it depend where is domain name registrar is located? Curious to know how this part of your results is handled.

Obviously I changed the above to be correct when contacting MSN.
Janine I see your whois record has IE also as opposed to Ireland so it must not be the issue for akamarketing.com.

I'll let people know if I get any reply.

Just looking back here.

'Issues' as in Irish/UK hosts having blocks of IPs that are registered in the US. So people signing up believe that they are hosted in the UK so will do well in UK SERPs but subsequently find out that the IP is US registered.

I have no direct knowledge of this, and TBH HTTP isn't really my forte, but I have read some stories of this.

You really need that comment subscription thingy :)

Hi David

It depends on the customer, some come to use with pre registered domains and look after billing themeselves, others dont . For new registrations we use Enom.

Rgds

hi david,
well, it wasn't really a discussion but here's the link anyway! :) http://www.janinedalton.com/blog/archives/2005/yahoo-knows-where-i-live/

i'm a bit confused about how you find where an ip physically resolves to versus where it is registered. so maybe this won't show the right info, but it looks to me like the ip my domain is hosted on is both registered in and hosted in texas? http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/whois.ch?ip=67.19.14.18

it's interesting to know that the registration details of the ip have a baring. i had always assumed just where the site was hosting was what counted. you learn something new every day! :)
